  • Provenance: The Potomack Company, Alexandria, Virginia, 3 October 2025, Lot 767.
  • Notes: Richard Montgomery (1738–1775) was born on 2 December 1738 in Ireland to an Ulster-Scots family. He entered Trinity College Dublin in 1754 and, two years later, joined the British Army, serving during the French and Indian War. Montgomery rose steadily through the ranks while stationed in North America and the West Indies. Following the war, he served at Fort Detroit during Pontiac's Rebellion before returning to Britain due to ill health. In 1773, Montgomery returned to the American colonies, married Janet Livingston of the influential Livingston family of New York, and settled as a farmer. With the outbreak of the American Revolution, he embraced the Patriot cause and was elected to the New York Provincial Congress in May 1775. The following month he was commissioned a brigadier general in the Continental Army, later playing a leading role in the unsuccessful American invasion of Canada, during which he was killed at Quebec on December 31, 1775. The modern flag of Montgomery County, Maryland, adopted on October 5, 1976, is derived from the heraldic arms of the Montgomery family, for whom the county was named in honor of General Richard Montgomery.
