Chinese Export Armorial Octagonal Soup Plate made for Samuel Vaughan, friend of George Washington

ca. 1770; bearing central arms of Vaughan impaling Hallowell; decorated with gilt and blue chain border with alternating floral sprays; diameter: 9 in.

  • Provenance: With Polly Latham Asian Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; Alex Cooper Auctioneers, Towson, Maryland, June 14, 2024, Lot 1416.
  • Literature: Howard, D. S., Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. II, London: 2003, p. 576; Schiffer, H., P., and N., China for America: Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries, Atglen: 1980, p. 34 (illus.).
  • Notes: This octagonal soup plate is from one of the Chinese export armorial services made for Samuel Vaughan, an English merchant and planter in Jamaica, who married Sarah Hallowell of Boston in 1747. The plate is centered with the arms of Vaughan impaling Hallowell and belongs to a later service distinguished by its gilt and blue chain border and alternating Chinese bird and landscape panels. Howard illustrates and discusses this service in Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. II, p. 576. A closely related pair of soup plates has also been described as one of three services made for Vaughan.

The service is of interest to both English and American collectors. Although ordered within British trade networks, it has important American associations through Sarah Hallowell and the later history of the family. After the Revolution, part of the Vaughan-Hallowell family settled in Hallowell, Maine, where they played a prominent role in the development of the area. The plate therefore combines an English East India Company armorial commission with significant American family associations.
