ca. 1745; depicting the instruments of a shroff, including scales, stamp, and a small pile of cut money; decorated with gilt spearhead border and cobalt blue floral sprays; diameter: 9 in.

  • Provenance: Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, Illinois.
  • Literature: Howard, D. and Ayers, J., Masterpieces of Chinese Export Porcelain, London: 1981, p. 46, fig. 209; Hervouët, F., N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris: 1986, p. 32, no. 1.39.
  • Notes: The subject of this plate may be read as a visual shorthand for the China Trade itself. It depicts the tools of a shroff, or money-changer and assayer, whose work was essential to commerce between Chinese merchants and foreign traders. In a trade economy in which silver circulated by weight and fineness, the shroff weighed, tested, cut, and stamped money or bullion to verify its value. The scales, shears, stamp, and pieces of cut silver shown here therefore refer not only to currency exchange, but also to the commercial mechanisms that made the commissioning and export of Chinese porcelain possible. Howard and Ayers illustrate a related plate in China for the West, Vol. I, p. 46, describing it as painted at Canton with blue enamel borders and a famille rose center depicting the implements of the shroff, and noting that the decoration may have been intended for the Danish market, where blue enamel was especially popular. Hervouët and Bruneau likewise include this subject in their opening chapter on the history of the China Trade, underscoring its significance as a rare porcelain design about the trade system itself. William C. Hunter, writing in The "Fan Kwae" at Canton before Treaty Days, 1825–1844, emphasized the importance of shroffs in Canton commerce, noting that silver and dollars were "shroffed and weighed" before deposit, and that repeated weighing and stamping produced what were known in Canton as "chopped dollars" or "cut money." Mr. Binder believes that this is one of only two examples from this unique service that remain in private hands and considers it among the most prized items in his entire collection.
