Very Rare Chinese Export European Market Grisaille Milk Jug

ca. 1745; depicting a landscape scene of a farmer herding cattle and decorated with gilt and en grisaille foliate border; height: 4 in.

  • Literature: For a similar example, see Hervouët, F., N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Flammarion: Paris, 1986, p. 84, fig. 4.8.; Goldsmith, J., P., China Trade Porcelain, p. 65.
  • Notes: The source for this scene has not been firmly identified and may have been a European ceramic or printed model. The subject has been variously described as The Building of the Zuider Zee Dam and Road Along a Rugged Shore. The finely drawn, overlapping scroll border at the neck reflects German Hausmalerei decoration on Meissen porcelain; Hausmalerei, literally "home painting," refers to porcelain painted outside the factory by independent decorators or workshops.
