Chinese Export American Market Orange Fitzhugh Covered Tureen

ca. 1800-1810; featuring double strap handles with foliate terminals; depicting a spread-wing eagle holding a banner inscribed E Pluribus Unum in its beak, and arrows and olive branches in its talons, with a shield inscribed with the monogram BLP; decorated with orange butterfly, foliate, and trellis border; tureen height: 9 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Alex Cooper Auctioneers, Towson, Maryland, 6 April 2024, Lot 1410, (museum de-accession number located on the underside).
  • Notes: The so-called ‘FitzHugh' patterns, named after the English family who ordered a blue and white service with this distinctive decoration about 1780, became particularly popular in America, the grandest made in more unusual colors and displaying the national emblem of the new republic – the orange Fitzhugh was made for some prosperous patriot as-yet-unidentified and initialed BLP. The eagles on FitzHugh porcelain are usually Type VI or Type VII eagles. In this example with sepia eagle the initials BLP are those of an unknown owner and the FitzHugh decoration is painted in orange. Other FitzHugh eagle services with initials were made in various colors, such as a sepia service for BA and a blue service for a family M, both represented in the collection at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.
  • Condition: loss of finial on the tureen
