  • Provenance: With David Pannorfi Antiques & Fine Art, Andover, Connecticut.
  • Literature: For similar examples, see Schiffer, H., P, and N., China for America: Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Atglen: 1997, p. 84. A 31-piece portion of this dinner service sold at Christie's, New York, 27 January 2014, Lot 436 ($25,000 price realized).
  • Notes: This particular piece was part of a large tea and coffee service ordered by Captain Daniel C. Bacon (1787-1856), a prominent Boston merchant and ship master out of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Bacon was born in Barnstable and went off to Boston in 1802, at 14 years old, to sail as a mate on William Sturgis's ship Atahualpa. He was first mate on the Xenophon, and became its Captain in 1807. He later sailed on Theodore Lyman's ship and distinguished himself in trade with China and in the Pacific Northwest fur trade, making his fortune. He retired from the seas in the 1820s. Services such as these were ordered in the early years of the 19th century, part of a cult of mourning and patriotism after the death of George Washington.
