Highly Important and Exceptional Chinese Export American Market Orange Fitzhugh Plate from the service of Captain William Orne, Salem, Massachusetts

ca. 1800-1810; depicting a spread-wing eagle holding a banner inscribed E Pluribus Unum in its beak, and arrows and olive branches in its talons and decorated with an orange butterfly, foliate, and trellis border; diameter: 9 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: With David Pannorfi Antiques & Fine Art, Andover, Connecticut.
  • Notes: This plate is from the service of Captain William Orne (1752-1815) of Salem, Massachusetts. A large portion of the service can be found in the collection of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the U.S. Department of State (accession no. RR-1990.0016.1-.10).
  • Condition: loss of finial on the tureen
