  • Notes: This plate depicts Les Oies de Frère Philippe, a tale from Jean de La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles en vers, itself adapted from Boccaccio's Decameron. The story concerns a young man, raised in isolation by his father, who encounters women for the first time and is told that they are "geese." The subject was painted by Nicolas Lancret around 1736 and engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin in 1737, providing the source through which the composition circulated. The present plate follows Lancret's composition and reflects the adaptation of French literary and theatrical imagery by Chinese painters for the European export market.
