Unrecorded and Highly Important Chinese Export English Market Armorial Tea Bowl and Saucer

ca. 1751; decorated with polychrome floral border; bearing en grisaille central crest with gateway embattled between two towers with an anchor in the portal; inscribed Stockton Arms and likely intended to bear the arms of the town of Stockton-on-Tees; diameter of saucer: 4 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: With Paul Beighton Auctioneers, Ltd., Thurcroft, England, 15 November 2015, Lot 136.
  • Notes: This tea bowl and saucer bear a civic crest or badge associated with Stockton-on-Tees. The device refers to Stockton Castle, a medieval residence of the Bishops of Durham and a prominent symbol of the town. The castle was occupied by Scottish forces during the Civil War and was later dismantled or destroyed after the war, though local accounts differ as to whether this occurred by order of Oliver Cromwell or whether the castle was already partly ruinous. The dating of the service, circa 1751, suggests an order connected with local civic memory of the castle. The subject appears to be unrecorded in the standard literature and may be the only surviving pieces from the Chinese export porcelain service associated with Stockton-on-Tees. While town views, civic devices, and European buildings are known on Chinese export porcelain (including the Borough of Newbury service inscribed Burgus de Newbury, Dutch architectural subjects, and the Burghley House punch bowl) this small tea service appears to be an exceptionally rare English civic armorial commission. The nearby Tees Valley Museums has noted the continuing local interest in Stockton Castle, observing that although the building no longer survives, "the local pride and interest remains to this very day."
