Unrecorded Chinese Export American Market Masonic Subject Helmet Pitcher, likely for a Boston area Masonic Lodge

ca. 1810; decorated with polychrome enamels, the central roundel depicting a landscape scene surrounded by masonic symbols; height: 5 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Eldred's Auction Gallery, East Dennis, Massachusetts, 12 January 2023, Lot 21.
  • Notes: This helmet pitcher is an unrecorded Chinese export Masonic subject, probably made for the American market in the early nineteenth century. Its central landscape roundel, carefully painted and surrounded by Masonic emblems, suggests a special commission, perhaps for a lodge or lodge member in the Boston area. The landscape may represent a specific location, though no source or site has yet been identified.

The twelve Masonic symbols encircling the scene add to the object's esoteric character. While the number twelve carries broad symbolic resonance in Masonic and biblical traditions, including associations with order, time, and the twelve tribes of Israel, the precise significance of the twelve devices here remains uncertain. The pitcher is therefore best understood as a rare and enigmatic Masonic commission, combining lodge symbolism, landscape imagery, and Chinese export decoration in a form not previously recorded.
