Pair of Unrecorded Chinese Export American Market Plates ordered by Captain Nicholas Bartlett Jr., Marblehead, Massachusetts

ca. 1800; decorated with gilt and en grisaille dot and trellis border with a spearhead trim; bearing a draped gilt shield inscribed HB each diameter: 9 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Southborough, Massachusetts collection.
  • Notes: These plates were ordered for Captain Nicholas Bartlett, Jr. of Marblehead, Massachusetts, and his wife, Hannah Barker Bartlett, whose initials HB appear on the draped gilt shield. Bartlett was born in Marblehead in 1751 and married Hannah Barker there in 1777. During the Revolutionary War, he served at sea in a succession of Continental and Massachusetts vessels, including as First Lieutenant aboard the frigate Hancock under Captain Samuel Tucker, and later in command of the brigs Penet, America, and General Glover. His service included transatlantic voyages carrying military stores, capture by the British, imprisonment in England, escape to Holland, and later service aboard the frigate South Carolina under Commodore Alexander Gillon.

The restrained gilt and en grisaille decoration of the present plates reflects the refined taste of Federal-period American-market porcelain. Their direct connection to Bartlett and his wife places them within the maritime world of Marblehead, a town deeply tied to Revolutionary naval service and early American commerce. As unrecorded survivals from a specific Massachusetts family commission, the plates are a rare example of Chinese export porcelain linking local domestic patronage with the wider Atlantic service of a Revolutionary sea captain.
