Pair of Chinese Export Brown Fitzhugh Plates from the service of Robert Henley, Williamsburg, Virginia

    Biographical Note: Robert Henley was born on 5 January 1783 in Williamsburg, Virginia, the son of Leonard and Elizabeth Dandridge Henley and a nephew of Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, wife of George Washington. He entered the United States Navy as a midshipman on 8 April 1799. Following the War of 1812, Henley held a variety of naval appointments before taking command of the sloop-of-war Hornet, in which he served against piracy in the West Indies. In 1821 he achieved particular distinction with the capture of the pirate schooner Moscow off Santo Domingo on 29 October. He subsequently served as commandant of the Naval Rendezvous at Norfolk from 1822 to 1824, after which he was assigned to similar duty in Charleston, South Carolina. Captain Henley died on 7 October 1828 at Sullivan's Island following a short illness. He was later interred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama.
