Chinese Export American Market Green Fitzhugh Warming Plate for the Spooner Family, Plymouth, Massachusetts, with ties to Plymouth Rock

ca. 1820; depicting in green enamel central floral sprays and a floral roundel containing the monogram S and decorated with gilt rim and green butterfly, lattice, and geometric border; diameter: 11 in.

  • Provenance: From a private American collection.
  • Notes: The Spooner family has a long significant history in Massachusetts, particularly in Plymouth where the Spooner House (built 1749) served as a family home for over 200 years. The lineage in America is often traced back to William Spooner, who arrived in 1637, and includes notable figures like the merchant and patriot Deacon Ephraim Spooner, as well as Bathsheba Spooner, who was involved in an infamous murder trial in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1778. The family has deep roots in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, with various members serving as merchants, mariners, farmers, and reformers. The present piece of Chinese export porcelain was ordered by either Deacon Ephraim Spooner or his (then adult) son Captain Nathaniel Spooner.
