NORBERT HEERMANN (German/American, 1891-1966)

  • Notes: Born into a prominent German family, Heerman was surrounded by musicians and composers throughout his childhood. He came to the U.S. with his violinist father just after the turn of the century, where he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then travelled to Europe, where he studied at the Academy Julien in Paris and with Lovis Corinth in Berlin. Upon his return to the U.S., he became the Art Editor of the Cincinnati Inquirer and studied under Frank Duveneck. A fellow Duveneck student, John Carroll, introduced Heermann to the Woodstock Art Colony, where he and his wife Elizabeth eventually settled amongst their friends Speicher, Rosen, Bellows and Henri.
