FINE TATAMI-DO-NO-GUSOKU, Japan, 17th century, the mempo signed Munetsuna (Myochin Munetsuna)

Other Notes: The 1985 Christie's catalogue notes: Comprising of a fine "kabuto" with russet-iron "o-boshi-hosibachi" formed from sixteen plates, six without "hoshi" but inscribed with invocations to various deities, including Kasuga Daimyojin and Hachiman Daibosatsu, with spring attached "ukebari", gilt "kuwagata" and "kuwagata-dai", engraved "fukurin" to the buckskin-covered "fukigaeshi" and russet-iron rabbit "maedate," the ears lacquered red, the helmet unsigned; with russet-iron "mempo" with large hinged "yodare-kake:, signed below the chin; the folding "do" formed from rectangular russet-iron plates linked with chain main, an "uchidashi" dragon in front; with "shinogote," gold lacquered "ko-sode", "kawara-haidate", and "shino-suneate", with box.


  • Condition: Wear consistent with age; some gilding rubbed off and textile worn in places, particularly noticeable on the knees. A few links of the chain mail disconnected. Overall good condition.
