  • Provenance: Dreweatts, Donnington Priory, England, 22 May 2024, Lot 626.
  • Notes: On January 21, 2009, Christie's New York offered a 202-piece dinner service from this rare Chinese export "Priestly Blessing" pattern, which realized $278,500. Very few examples outside that large service appear to be recorded.

The central device, with upraised hands, palms outward, represents the Judaic Priestly Blessing, or Birkat Kohanim, also known as the Aaronic Blessing or Nesi'at Kapayim, the "lifting of the hands." One of the oldest and best-known Jewish rituals, the blessing derives from Numbers 6:22–27 and was performed in the Temple as part of the daily Tamid service, the priests standing with raised hands while pronouncing the words of benediction. After the destruction of the Temple and the end of sacrificial worship, the blessing became part of the public synagogue service, where it is recited by adult male descendants of the priestly line.
