  • Notes: The following description was prepared by His Excellency Paulo Cunha Alves, Portugal's Ambassador to Romania, a published author on the China Trade, a distinguished collector of Chinese export porcelain, and a dear friend of Mr. Binder: "This biblical scene, popular in the iconographic repertoire of engravers, has been performed in different ways and styles in Europe since the early 16th century. Hervouët and Bruneau (1986) refer to the engraving (c. 1520) that was the source for this scene, which was created by Marco Antonio Raimondi (1480-1534), and was based on a fresco from Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520) that decorates the Vatican Loggia and was inspired by the Book of Genesis. Examples of this engraving can be found at the British Museum in London and at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. However, other engravings might also have been a source of inspiration to the Chinese artist, such as one by the Dutch artist Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533). "
