Extremely Rare Chinese Export Classical Era European Subject Cup

ca. 1775; depicting in the polychrome central roundel Antony and Cleopatra in front of an arch and decorated with famille rose floral border; the scene based on the engraving by Joseph de Longueil (French, 1730–1792) after Charles Eisen (French, 1720–1778); height: 2 5/8 in.

  • Provenance: The Private Collection of Elinor Gordon; Sotheby's, New York, Chinese Export Porcelain from the Private Collection of Elinor Gordon, 23 January 2010, Lot 251.
  • Literature: Hervouët, F. and N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Flammarion: Paris, 1986, p. 201, no. 9.24, depict this coffee cup, which appears to be the only known example to survive into the 21st century.
  • Notes: The scene is highly unusual among Chinese export porcelain with European subjects in that it depicts an episode from classical history rather than a biblical, mythological, or allegorical source. It represents Antony and Cleopatra, after an engraving by Joseph de Longueil after Charles Eisen. The camel in the background, presumably alluding to Egypt and the East, is especially noteworthy and may be unique, or nearly so, within the known repertoire of Chinese export porcelains decorated with European subject scenes.
