Unrecorded and Exceptional Chinese Export European Market Polychrome Enamel Mythological Subject Plate

ca. 1740; depicting a naked boy standing beside the kneeling figure of Echo, wearing scant rose drapery and peering from behind green and yellow leafed trees at her beloved Narcissus seated on the opposite bank of a stream, wearing scant iron-red drapery and gazing into the water; in the foreground pink flowering plants and grey rocks, and in the distance rose hills beneath a pink and blue sky and decorated with gilt-starred lattice rim and central roundel with gilt foliate border; the scene likely based on the engraving by François Vivares (French, 1709-1780) after Claude Lorrain (French, 1600-1682); diameter: 8 7/8 in.

  • Provenance: De Baecque et Associes, Lyon, France.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Sotheby's, New York, Chinese Export Porcelain and English Pottery, 27 January 1988, Lot 248.
  • Notes: The scene depicts Echo and Narcissus, probably after François Vivares's engraving Landscape with Narcissus and Echo, published in 1743 after a composition by Claude Lorrain. The apparent rarity of the subject, combined with the unusually rich polychrome enamel and elaborate gilt borders, makes this an exceptional survival among Chinese export mythological subjects.
