  • Notes: Samuel Verplanck (1739–1820) was born in New York City on 19 September 1739, then part of the Province of New York in British America. He was among the first graduating class of King's College (now Columbia University) and later served as a governor of the institution. Verplanck established himself in New York as a successful wholesale merchant and banker. Prior to the American Revolution, he became associated with anti-British political circles and joined the New York Committee of One Hundred, formed in 1775 to assume civil authority in the event of rebellion following the outbreak of hostilities at Lexington and Concord. He subsequently served on the Committee of Safety and as a delegate to the New York Provincial Congress, representing the City and County of New York. Although he signed the Association pledging resistance to Great Britain, he later withdrew from active participation in the Revolutionary cause and adopted a comparatively neutral stance during the war.
