  • Notes: There are many versions of this subject matter, but this particular one, painted en grisaille within a magnificent and dense gilt border within the well, is particularly fetching and rare. The scene is copied from a 1708 engraving by Bernard Picart (1673-1733) entitled Les Pèlerins de l'Isle de Cythère. It depicts Eros leading the way to a boat that will carry the amorous pilgrims to Cythera, a Greek island known in antiquity for its cult of Aphrodite. The most famous treatment of this subject, which is usually interpreted as an allegory of love, is Le Pèlerinage à l'Isle de Cythère (1717) by Jean Antoine Watteau (1684-1721).
