Chinese Export American Market Rose Medallion Plate for Lewis G. Morris, The Bronx, New York

1867-1870; depicting polychrome medallions depicting courtly scenes alternating with vignettes of birds, flowers, and butterflies against a tightly packed gilded ground with scrolling vines; bearing in the central roundel a faded gilt M; diameter: 8 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Brighton, Colorado collection.
  • Notes: This Rose Medallion plate was made for Lewis Gouverneur Morris of Morrisania, now part of the Bronx, New York. A member of the prominent Morris family, he was connected by descent to the colonial and early national history of New York and was part of the extended family circle associated with Gouverneur Morris, one of the framers of the Constitution. The faded gilt M in the central roundel identifies the plate as a special-order piece rather than a stock export example.

Morris inherited the family estate at Mount Fordham and remained closely associated with the Morrisania area before later relocating to Scarsdale, where he pursued agricultural interests. He was active in public works and land-use disputes affecting the Harlem River, including litigation and advocacy concerning navigation, Macombs Dam, and proposed improvements to the river corridor. The plate therefore connects the late Rose Medallion taste of the 1860s with one of New York's oldest landed families at a moment when the Bronx and upper Manhattan were undergoing major transformation.
