  • Provenance: Estate Collection of Charles and Barbara Ghesquiere, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; DuMouchelles Auctions, Detroit, Michigan.
  • Literature: Mudge, J. M., Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, New York: 1986, p. 220.
  • Notes: This pair of plates is from a Chinese export armorial service made for Gerrit Wessels Van Schaick of Albany, New York. Born in 1758, Van Schaick was the son of Wessel Van Schaick and Maria Gerritsen and a member of a prominent Albany family with ties to the Ten Broecks. From 1792 to 1815, he served as cashier of the Bank of Albany and was active in the city's civic and commercial life. The service is especially interesting for its connection to John Jacob Astor, Van Schaick's friend and banker-client, whose ships were deeply engaged in the China trade. Surviving correspondence between Van Schaick and Astor from 1804–05, now in the Gansevoort-Lansing Collection at the New York Public Library, documents their friendly business relationship and supports the tradition that Van Schaick obtained this service through Astor. The plates thus connect Albany mercantile society, early American banking, and the China trade at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
