  • Provenance: From a private Atlanta, Georgia collection.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Mudge, J., Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, New York: 1986, p.175, pl. 274.
  • Notes: This plate is from a Chinese export famille verte "Palaceware" order associated with Augustine Heard, Sr. of Boston, one of the most important American merchants active in China in the mid-nineteenth century. Born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1785, Heard went to sea as a young man and later became a partner in Russell & Co. at Canton before founding Augustine Heard & Co. in 1840 with Joseph Coolidge and John Murray Forbes. By the late 1840s, the firm had become one of the leading American houses in China, with operations extending beyond Canton to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Fuzhou, Amoy, and Ningbo.

The plate's rich famille verte palette, courtly figural scene, and dense border of flowers and precious objects reflect the taste for highly decorative export porcelain that continued among American China Trade families well into the nineteenth century. Its association with Heard places it within the world of Boston mercantile patronage and the American commercial community in Canton, at the moment when American firms were expanding rapidly in the treaty-port era.
