Chinese Export American Market Cider Jug, likely for the Lewis Family, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

ca. 1796-1800; bearing a central laurel wreath inscribed with the gilt monogram SL; decorated with cobalt blue underglazed lattice border with a spearhead edge; height: 10 in.

  • Provenance: Richard Worth Antiques, Centerville, Delaware.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Lee, J. G., Philadelphia and the China Trade, 1784–1844, Philadelphia Museum: Philadelphia, 1984, pp. 122-123.
  • Notes: This service is likely related to the marriage of Robert Waln (1765-1836) and Phebe Lewis (1768-1845), who were married October 10, 1787. Robert Waln was a grandson of Nicholas Waln (1650-1721/22), who came to Pennsylvania in 1682 with William Penn in the Welcome. Beginning in 1788, Robert Waln and a cousin, Jesse, branched out on their own "and continued in business as merchants and importers trading with Europe, the West Indies the East Indies, and China." Robert Waln had a part or full interest in at least twelve ships trading with Canton. Along with Jesse, he was one of the ship's largest investors and ordered china, lacquerware, and four large landscape paintings. The cipher on this present group of lots is SL,' which likely indicates that Waln ordered it on behalf of certain of his relatives on his wife Phebe's (nee Lewis) Waln's side. Lee illustrates the "RW" service with a single photograph of approximately 20 pieces from the dinner and tea services, noting that "[s]hown here is a selection from a much larger service, part of which is in the Ryerss Museum and part owned privately." The Ryerss Museum and Library is located in Burholme Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
