ca. 1796-1800; bearing a central laurel wreath inscribed with the gilt monogram SL; decorated with cobalt blue underglazed lattice border with a spearhead edge; height: 6 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Richard Worth Antiques, Centerville, Delaware.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Lee, J. G., Philadelphia and the China Trade, 1784–1844, Philadelphia Museum: Philadelphia, 1984, pp. 122-123.
  • Notes: This service is likely associated with the marriage of Robert Waln (1765–1836) and Phebe Lewis (1768–1845), who were married on 10 October 1787. Waln descended from Nicholas Waln (1650–1721/22), an early Pennsylvania settler who arrived with William Penn in 1682 aboard the Welcome. By the late 1780s Waln was established in Philadelphia mercantile life, initially working in a counting house before entering partnership with his cousin Jesse Waln as a merchant and importer trading with Europe, the West Indies, India, and China. As noted by Lee (p. 122), he held interests in a number of vessels engaged in the Canton trade from the mid-1790s onward, beginning with the Pigou (1796–97), from which he is recorded as having ordered Chinese export porcelain, lacquerware, and landscape paintings. Members of the extended Waln family were also active in China trade and shipping ventures, including William Waln (1775–1826) and Jacob Shoemaker Waln (1776–1850), reflecting a wider family network engaged in mercantile activity. Waln's commercial success was invested in land speculation, manufacturing, and Philadelphia real estate, including an interest in the Phoenix Works (1812–1822), a nail manufactory operated with his Lewis in-laws. He also held public office, serving in the Pennsylvania legislature (1794–1798), the U.S. House of Representatives (1798–1801), and later as president of the Philadelphia Select Council (1817–1819). The cipher "SL" associated with the present group of lots likely indicates that the service was ordered through or for members of the Lewis family on Phebe Waln's side. Lee illustrates a related "RW" service, divided between the Ryerss Museum and Library in Philadelphia and private collections, suggesting the survival of a larger original assemblage.
