An Extremely Rare Chinese Export American Market 'Sample' Coffee Cup and Saucer

ca. 1800; decorated with gilt, blue, and purple foliate and fruit motifs with various patterns along the border; bearing monogram AT (or AJ); diameter of saucer: 5 3/8 in.

  • Provenance: Bukowskis, Stockholm, 24-30 November 2015, Lot 266.
  • Literature: Mueller, S., Chinese Export Porcelain Curiosities, Oxford: 2000, vol. XLVI, no. I, pp. 25-26.
Comparable pieces have appeared at auction, including a side plate sold at Christie's New York in 2017, pots de crème from the Elinor Gordon Collection sold at Sotheby's New York in 2010, a cup and saucer sold at Christie's New York in 2008, and, most recently, a coffee cup and saucer sold at Grogan & Company on 16 August 2023 (Lot 278, price realized $10,625).

Examples from this curious "sample pattern" service are among the most sought-after by collectors, with the coffee can and saucer combination especially rare. The service is of uncertain origin and appears to have been conceived to display a range of decorative borders, yet was also monogrammed AT (or possibly AJ), suggesting that it was made for a specific individual. The borders reflect the neoclassical taste fashionable around the turn of the nineteenth century and are characteristic of the "Federal style" that dominated Chinese export porcelain produced for the American market from circa 1785 to 1815.

A.E. Lange discusses a related teabowl from the service in Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield, pp. 237–238, fig. 99, noting that the various border patterns range from solid blue bands to pink and green vine-and-berry motifs. Lange also records other forms from the service, including a punch bowl, pots de crème, a chamberstick, plates, bowls, and a mug with similar sample borders but without the initials. The intended purpose of the service remains debated: it may have served as a sample set to help customers choose border patterns, but it may also have been a novelty commission or even a single dinner service specially decorated for the monogrammed owner.
