Highly Important and Massive Chinese Export American Market Landscape Subject Punch Bowl

ca. 1804; depicting on one side a sepia landscape with a lake, and the verso roundel depicting an enormous country house, decorated with polychrome border of fruit and foliage on a gilt ground border; diameter: 14 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Alderfer Auction, Hatfield, Pennsylvania.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Bonham's New York, Cohen & Cohen: 50 Years of Chinese Export Collecting, 24 January 2023, Lot 33; Christie's New York, 27 January 2014, Lot 452.

That this punch bowl was made for the American market is strongly suggested by the fact that the only two closely comparable bowls known to have appeared on the market are both associated with identifiable American landscapes. The exterior border, decorated with polychrome flowers reserved against a gilt ground, is characteristic of Chinese export porcelain of the period. Bowls of this form and scale are often described as christening bowls, and the present example, both in its decoration and apparent American subject matter, suggests a special commission for the American market dating to around 1800.
