  • Provenance: Collection of Brian B. and Elizabeth H. Topping of Baltimore, Maryland; Pook & Pook, Inc., Downingtown, Pennsylvania, 3 October 2025, Lot 180.
  • Literature: For a similar example, see Mudge, J.M., Chinese Export Porcelain in North America. New York: 1986, p.156, fig. 64.
  • Notes: In An Exhibition of China Trade Porcelain Designed to Illustrate the Wares Imported to the Port of New Haven, New Haven Colony Historical Society (1968), a cup and saucer dated circa 1800–1810 and descended from Hervey and Nancy (Bradley) Mulford of New Haven are illustrated (p. 73, fig. 32). The pieces, which bear the initials of the Mulfords, feature a border design identical to that found on the present lot, suggesting either a shared workshop pattern or closely related commission source within the Canton export trade. The central scene also bears a more loosely rendered, though recognisable, resemblance to the decoration on a garniture traditionally associated with Captain John Barry of Philadelphia, believed to have been ordered circa 1795. While more crudely executed in the present example, the compositional parallels are nevertheless notable and may indicate the adaptation of a popular engraved or painted prototype within multiple Chinese export workshops serving the American market.
