WILLIAM HENRY BROWN

American, 1808-1883

The Marquis de Lafayette

cut black paper on paper with ink wash
12 1/2 x 8 1/4 in., frame: 15 1/2 x 11 in.

  • Provenance: The Collection of a Beacon Hill, Boston Gentleman
  • Notes: Bearing typewritten note verso stating This rare Silhouette of the Marquis de Lafayette was cut during the visit of this beloved Revolutionary Hero to the City of Philadelphia, Sept. 21, 1824. The Profilist was the celebrated William Henry Brown who at this time cut many Shades of many of the most eminent Citisens of this time from his tiny studio on Pine St. Wm. Brown was unexcelled in his cuttings of Gentlemen. His work was entirely executed with scissors and the finish products mirror the truth and strength of the sitters Character. Once seen the work of this Master Craftsman can never be forgotten. Alas, so few examples remain! - R.H. Cleverly, Boston
  • Condition: Backing paper toned, with foxing concentrated in upper left corner; uneven wear and scattered surface abrasion in margins of backing paper. The black paper of silhouette is in fine condition: with the exception of the even rectangle of toning visible surrounding the figure, most of the condition concerns are in the margins of the backing sheet.
