William Aiken Walker is best known for his depictions of the lives of the Black sharecroppers he encountered in his travels throughout the South and along the Mississippi River in the years following the Civil War. By the 1880s, he had found success selling his paintings to Northern tourists, and he gained further notoriety when two of his paintings were reproduced as chromolithographs by Currier & Ives in 1883-4.
