Very Rare Pair of Chinese Export Swedish Market Armorial Plates

ca. 1910; bearing the KEILLER crest inscribed with the motto FORTITER ET CELERITER; decorated with polychrome harlequin diaper border and centrally depicting auspicious symbols such as shou characters, coins, deer, bats, butterflies, a painting, a sword in a scabbard, and a vase; diameter: 10 in.

  • Provenance: With Three Tails Collectables, Todmorden, England.
  • Literature: Howard, D. S., Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. II., London: 2003, p. 704.
  • Notes: Although the crest and motto are British in origin, this service was made for the Swedish market and is associated with the Gothenburg Keiller family, which was of Scottish descent. Alexander Keiller, born in Dundee, arrived in Gothenburg in 1826 and became associated with William Gibson in the firm Gibson & Keiller; in 1841 he founded Keillers Mekaniska Verkstad, later Göteborgs Mekaniska Verkstad and, eventually, Götaverken. A later descendant, James Keiller, obtained royal permission in 1905, together with the dealer Carl Lyon, to recover porcelain from the wreck of the Swedish East Indiaman Götheborg, which had sunk at the entrance to Gothenburg harbor in 1745. Salvage work continued in 1906 and 1907. The present service, inscribed for Alice and James Keiller and dated Canton 1910, was presumably ordered in the wake of that celebrated recovery and reflects the family's close association with Chinese porcelain and the history of the Swedish China trade. The motto FORTITER ET CELERITER may be translated as "bravely and swiftly."
