  • Notes: A very rare Chinese export famille rose dinner plate depicting the Nativity of Christ, after an engraving by Jan Luyken used in the Dutch Nederduytse Bijbel. The design belongs to a small group of Chinese export porcelains decorated with scenes from the life of Christ, including the Nativity, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension. Porcelains of this type were long described as "Jesuit ware," a term applied in the twentieth century to Chinese export wares with European religious subjects, often painted en grisaille or encre de chine to imitate engraved sources. Although the term remains useful descriptively, these wares were made for the European market more broadly and were not necessarily commissioned by Jesuits.
