Unrecorded Chinese Export European Market Biblical Subject '1 Kings 18:46' Helmet Pitcher

ca. 1745; depicting en grisaille a chariot scene traditionally associated with King Ahab and the prophet Elijah after 1 Kings 18:46, decorated with gilt and en grisaille floral motifs around the foot; height: 4 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: The collection Per Toftager; Stockholms Auktionswerk Fine Art and Antiques, 6 December 2012, Lot 3261.
  • Literature: For a similar example from this service, see Sotheby's, New York, Important American Furniture, Folk Art, Folk Paintings and Chinese Export Porcelain, 24-25 October 1986, Lot 81. See also Hervouët and Bruneau, p. 322, no. 13.109.
  • Notes: The scene has been associated with 1 Kings 18:46, following Elijah's contest with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. After Ahab departed by chariot for Jezreel, "the hand of the Lord" came upon Elijah, who gathered up his garments and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. Here, the scene is from the vantage solely of the king and omits the prophet. Hervouët and Bruneau depict a much more crudely painted version of this scene, one that features not only King Ahab but also the fleeing Hebrew prophet Eijah. However, the authors mischaracterize the scene as one deriving from the Iliad, specifically of Hector (see p. 322, no. 13.109).
