Unrecorded Chinese Export European Market ‘Allegory of Old Age' Teapot

ca. 1750; depicting a central en grisaille image with flesh tones and gilt highlights depicting three elderly people sitting in the courtyard of a house, one woman is spinning wool while another is sleeping, while the man is petting a dog, next to them another man stands, holding a walking stick, while on the right, a third man is being rejected while courting a young girl and decorated with en grisaille foliate and geometric motifs; the scene after an engraving by Nicolas de Larmessin III (French, 1684–1755) after a painting by Nicolas Lancret (French, 1690 - 1743); height with lid: 4 3/4 in.

  • Provenance: From a private Portuguese collection.
  • Notes: This allegorical subject depicts Old Age, or La Vieillesse, from Nicolas Lancret's series The Four Ages of Man. The composition centers on elderly figures in a rustic courtyard: one woman spins, another sleeps, a seated man strokes a dog, and, at one side, a young woman rejects the advances of an old suitor. Lancret's set, now in the National Gallery, London, was engraved in reverse by Nicolas de Larmessin III in 1735, and it was through these prints that the compositions circulated widely. The present design has been simplified and adapted for the teapot form, with figures compressed and rearranged around the body. Related Lancret/Larmessin designs were also adapted by other printmakers, including George Bickham for musical-score vignettes.
