ca. 1879; featuring a triangular form with raised rim; bearing the inscription in capitals Emily Canton 1879; decorated in the 'Canton' style with roses, pomegranates, butterflies, and pheasants, a central gilt square with gilt; length: 10 1/2 in.

  • Provenance: Dominic Winter Auctioneers, Cirencester, United Kingdom, The David & Sarah Battie Collection, Asian Art, Antiques & Historic Textiles, 19 October 2023, Lot 43.
  • Literature: Howard, D. S., A Tale of Three Cities, Canton, Shanghai, Hong Kong; Sotheby's: London, 1997, p. 52; Feller, J. Q., The Canton Famille Rose Porcelains, Peabody Essex Museum: Salem, 1982, p. 27.
  • Notes: This documentary tray is a rare dated example of late nineteenth-century Chinese export porcelain painted in the Rose Medallion taste. Howard suggested that the form was probably intended as a tête-à-tête tea tray, while Feller illustrated the piece in The Canton Famille Rose Porcelains, p. 27. The inscription remains intriguing. Howard noted that, while Arabic inscriptions on Chinese bowls are not uncommon, fewer than half a dozen pieces with English dates and places were then recorded. He concluded that Emily most likely referred to a ship, though efforts to identify a ship named Emily at Canton in 1879 have not been successful. Whatever the precise meaning of the inscription, the combination of date, place, unusual form, and documentary wording makes this an exceptional survival from the final decades of the Qing Dynasty China trade.
