  • Literature: For a similar example, see Hervouët, F. and N., and Bruneau, Y., La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Flammarion: Paris, 1986, p. 267, fig. 11.26.
  • Notes: The rim of each piece is finely decorated with a gilt spearhead border typical of mid-eighteenth-century Chinese export porcelain. Two printed sources have been proposed for the central scene. The first is Jan Luyken's engraving of the Resurrection, from the Dutch Nederduytse Bijbel; Luyken's designs were also used for related Chinese export porcelain scenes of the Nativity and Crucifixion. Teresa Freitas Morna has also suggested an engraving by Hieronymus Wierix (1553–1619), published in Jerónimo Nadal's Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia, as an alternative source. The arrangement of the figures, however, appears closer to Luyken's composition, with the Chinese painter adapting the print through the addition of a broad landscape setting and decorative details.
This unusual trio is distinguishable by the fact that the individual who ordered the tea service of which they originally belonged had his initials inscribed in the shield of one of the sleeping Roman soldiers at the foot of the Cross. This highly important subject on eighteenth century Chinese export porcelain is represented in many museum collections, such as the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire in Brussels, Belgium; the Groniger Museum in Groningen, The Netherlands; and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. It can also be found in many of the most important private collections, such as the Alves Collection, the Hervouët Collection, the R. Albuquerque Collection, the Conde Collection, and the Veiga Collection, among others. For further reading, see Hervouët et al., p. 266, fig. 11.23.
