- Provenance: Pook and Pook, lot 71, December 1, 2000
- Notes: The highlight of Sully's career was his commission to paint Queen Victoria in 1837-1838. Unusual in the vivacity and charm of its portrayal, this canvas is most likely another in the series of the approximately 35 oil portraits, oil sketches, drawings, manuscripts and memorabilia which the artist used to complete the final full length coronation portrait. Some of these works by Sully were displayed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition, "Queen Victoria and Thomas Sully", January 2001.
- Condition: frame outer dimensions: 28 x 33 1/2 inches; blacklight: restoration throughout background and in face; >8% overall; restoration in forehead and right cheek, neck, shoulder, throughout background; canvas trimmed and laid down on new canvas; overall varnish applied to arrest craquelure
