circa 1845; A majestic mansion with four stories, an attic, twenty four windows and six balconies, this spectacular dolls' house was built in 1845 by William S. Watkins for his granddaughters. Finished in grain painted walnut over walnut, the house is constructed in five sections, each fitting together with shallow drawers between the floors. The attic hosts a secret compartment, which can only be accessed through a trapdoor in the back. It stands at an impressive height of 81 inches and weighs approximately 350 pounds! The house comes with a selection of furnishings, though not original to the house. Note: The history of this house and Mrs. Mahoney's collection is referenced in A History of Dolls' Houses by Flora Gill Jacobs, Charles Scribner & Sons, NY, 1965, pgs 105-106 and 234. It is also noted that there may be three such dolls' houses in existence.
