(French, 1714-1789) DESTRUCTION OF THE FRENCH FRIGATE "DROITS DE L'HOMME" oil on canvas; 38 1/2 x 51 1/4 inches; Provenance: Col. Roy Strong; Note: The destruction of the French frigate occurred on Jan. 14, 1779, after a battle on Jan. 13, 1779 between the frigate and the English ships "Indefagable 44" and "Amazon 36". Making it's way from Shannon, Ireland, the frigate was wrecked on the Nenmarck Rocks near Brest, with over 1,000 lives lost in the wreckage.
