564

SMALL SCALE THIRTEEN STAR AMERICAN FLAG, late 19th/early 20th century;

  • Condition: Lot 564 was likely made between 1895-1926. It is the Francis Hopkinson pattern, a design of 13 stars in a 3-2-3-2-3 configuration with 13 stripes (7 red and 6 white). Hopkinson being one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The large scale (6 foot) 13 star flag design was used during the 19th century and was adopted by the Navy. We know that commercial flag makers did not produce flags with this pieced and sewn construction in this size until after the 1890's, when the commemorative flag market became popular.
