Grogan & Company is honored to offer the Collection of Daniel B. Brewster, who, together with his wife Dara, has been a scholar and collector of rugs and textiles for over 40 years. Both Daniel and Dara are accomplished media executives and entrepreneurs, who have been drawn to exquisitely crafted, artisan-made items throughout their wide-ranging careers. Lots 41 through 50 represented here are a testament to their collection, and a celebration of their careful eye.

While exploring the world with their family in pursuit of immersion and understanding, Dan and Dara were inspired by the beautiful intricacies of heritage textiles and the cultural narratives they convey. They met with dyers and weavers, listened to their stories, and learned about their crafts. This ignited a desire to promote indigenous, artisan weaving as a foundation for cultural appreciation and advocacy. From Indonesian ikat to Navajo blankets, even the most utilitarian cloth tells a story of the environments and experiences of those who made them, particularly in places with limited resources. Their book, Threads of Time, is the embodiment of those intentions and hopes to be a foundation for continued exploration of world culture.

Threads of Time is a journey of cultural curiosity woven together by ancestral textiles. Cultural heritage and traditions have been handed down through generations by master textile artisans. Their belief systems, tribal history, wedding and burial traditions, and even counting systems, were woven into cloth with meaning and purpose lasting thousands of years. Textiles were often a primary narrative for cultures without written language. Woven artifacts tell the stories of who they are and why they are here, among overlooked or forgotten people in remote regions around the world. The pages of Threads of Time will illustrate the exquisite textiles with location photography, historical examples from centuries past to extraordinary contemporary expressions, revealing a continuum of inspiration and beauty. Contributors from these communities will author the seventeen chapters from Indonesia to America to fully express the stories of the cloth.

Reflecting on the journeys of the collection, Dara Brewster celebrated the compilation of the book: "We didn't collect textiles so much as they collected us. For over 40 years the search for textiles has led us to the fabric of communities from the Acoma Puebla to the islands of Indonesia to the deserts of North Africa to the highlands of Vietnam. It has been nothing short of humbling, awe-inspiring, and fun. Come with us on a journey through these incredible textiles from 16 regions around the world as we celebrate artisans, cultures, creativity, humanity, and stories of the cloth told by writers from each region."
