- Notes: In 1914, Robert Henri left New York for San Diego, to coordinate the art exhibition of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, held in San Francisco in 1915. During his time in California, Henri and his wife, Marjorie, spent the summer in La Jolla, where he painted landscapes and portraits. Henri's time in California is said to have sparked one of his most creative periods. James Dean, a resident of La Jolla, commissioned the artist to paint this view for his wife, Mrs. James Dean.
