Reverse Soumac Bag Face, Northwest Persia, South Caucasus, late 19th century

1 ft. 4 in. x 1 ft. 4 in.

  • Provenance: Lefevre and Partners, London, 25 November 1983, Lot 162.
  • Literature: Eiland, Murray. Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections. San Francisco Bay Area Rug Society: San Francisco, 1990, pl. 194.
  • Notes: The field of this bagface is divided into three horizontal rectangles; the top and bottom ones each contain 3 ashik guls within octagon[s] while the central rectangle contains a magnified version of the "syrga" pattern. All of the reverse sumakh analogies that I know of have very similar versions of this design. The rarer, all over pattern of ashik guls appears on the brocaded sumakh types. Examples of the latter include pl. 32 in Treasures of Near Eastern Looms (= From Bosphorus to Samarkand, pl. 50) and a very similar bag (at the time with Arky Robbins) in Hali 61, p. 180. The best of these that we've seen was exhibited by the L.A. Mayer Institute in Jerusalem in 1984-85 (published in Caucasian Rugs by Rachel Hasson, pl. 58), a khorjin from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Yanai of Tel Aviv. Analogies of the former include Rippon Boswell 11/13/93 #20; R.B. 11/15/03 #77; Nagel 11/11/95 #1097 and a khorjin published in Shahsavan pl. 222, assigned by Tanavoli to the Mianeh Hashtrud area. In the caption to our bagface in Pacific Collections, Murray Eiland Jr. preferred Southern Caucasus as place of origin.

    [ Pacific Collections caption]
    194. FLATWOVEN BAGFACE, probably southern Caucasus, 19th century, 16 1/2" x 17". This pleasing combination of well-known geometric motifs is likely to be Shahsevan work, and the wide central stripe is quite common in this type.
WARP: natural wool, 2 strands, Z-spun, S-plied. WEFT: red wool ground weft and supplementary wefts in reverse soumak weft wrapping. ENDS: bands of red plain weave at both ends, COLORS: (7): rust red, dark and light blue, light green, dark brown, tan, deep red-brown. FROM THE COLLECTION OF: Linda and Ralph Kaffel. Selected by Alan Marcuson.
