Rare Pair of Chinese Export American Market Rose Medallion Plates used at the White House by Ulysses S. Grant, Eighteenth President of the United States

ca. 1868; depicting polychrome medallions with courtly scenes alternating with vignettes of birds, flowers, and butterflies against a tightly packed gilded ground with scrolling vines; bearing the central monogram USG within a laurel crown; diameter: 8 in.

  • Provenance: Freeman's Auctions, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • Literature: For a dish from the same service, see Schiffer, H., P, and N., China for America, Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries, Atglen: 1997, p. 83.
  • Notes: The monogram "USG" on this rose medallion pair of plates stands for American President Ulysses Simpson Grant. As extant letters document, the three hundred and fifteen piece service from which the plate comes from was ordered in 1868 by Grant's wife, Julia, from a merchant in China, Daniel Ammen. The service was delivered to America in April of 1869 and was presumably used by the Grants during their administration at the White House, and moved to the Grant's New York City apartment post-presidency. The service was likely used alongside with the hand-painted fish plates (one of which is offered in this sale), which were later acquired personally by the couple in Canton on their 1877 world tour.
