Other Notes: This portrait depicts Ellen Ewing Stone, the first wife and great love of Canadian diplomat Thomas Archibald Stone. Tragically, Ellen died of breast cancer soon after their wedding. Thomas Stone went on to marry Ellen's older sister, Alexandra, with whom he had a daughter.
