PAUL REVERE Coin Silver Spoon,

turned-back with an oval handle; no monogram; markedRevere; lg. 8 5/8 in.; 2.13 ozt.

  • Provenance: By descendant of Benjamin Franklin; Property formerly from the Estate of Dr. C. Ray Franklin, Biltmore Forest, North Carolina; Brunk Auction, September 11, 2010, lot 0564; Private Collection of a Kentucky Gentleman.
  • Notes: Boston's famed patriot Paul Revere Jr. (1734-1818) trained as a silversmith with his father, a French Huguenot silversmith Apollos Rivoire, known in America as Paul Revere, Sr. (1702-1754). Paul Revere Jr. inherited his father's shop in 1754 and continued to run a successful business selling silver, jewelry, tools, hardware, and imported textiles. His younger brother Thomas Revere apprenticed at his shop and created the turned-back spoon. The turned-back handle design and bright-work on the front side of the spoon are characteristic of the flourishing Neoclassical fashions after the Revolution.
