Pair of Chinese Export Swedish Market Armorial Covered Sugar Bowls

ca. 1775-1785; featuring floral form finials; bearing the arms of TRANEFELT; decorated with polychrome floral swags; height: 5 1/4 in.

  • Provenance: Sotheby's, New York.
  • Notes: This service was ordered for Colonel Johan Werner Tranefelt (1730–1806), a Swedish nobleman and military officer whose arms appear on each piece. Tranefelt led Swedish forces against Denmark-Norway during the Theatre War of 1788–1789, a northern theater of the Russo-Swedish War. At the Battle of Kvistrum, fought on September 29, 1788, his outnumbered Swedish force was defeated and largely captured by a Danish-Norwegian army. Later accounts state that suspicions of misconduct fell on Tranefelt and his officers after the surrender; Tranefelt was subsequently punished and his military career effectively ruined. According to the history traditionally associated with this service, these events left him unable to pay for the Chinese export porcelain he had ordered, and the service passed instead into the possession of the Tham family at Öijared. The Tranefelt arms are recorded in Swea Rikes Ridderskaps och Adels Wapenbok, published in Stockholm in 1746; trana is Swedish for crane, stork, or heron, reflected in the bird displayed in the arms. Comparable pieces from the service have been catalogued as bearing the arms of Colonel Johan Werner Tranefelt and as commissioned by him.
