Pair of Chinese Export American Market Pseudo-Armorial Dishes from a Tea Service ordered by Nicholas Brown, Sr., Providence, Rhode Island

ca. 1790; centrally bearing two roundels centering two combined hearts inscribed NB to HB; decorated with cobalt blue and gilt floral border; diameter: 6 in.

  • Notes: This particular use of the sweetheart motif is especially curious considering that it was apparently given by Nicholas Brown, Sr. to his then quite elderly mother, Hope Brown. More commonly, sweetheart motifs were bestowed by husbands to their wives or perhaps fathers to their daughters. Nicholas Brown, Jr. in fact also ordered such a set for his wife Ann Brown.
