Pair of Chinese Export American Market Plates, belonging to John Brown, Providence, Rhode Island

ca. 1790; depicting in the central roundel a floral sprig and decorated with concentric borders of cobalt blue and gilt stars, scrolling polychrome foliate vines, and a geometric band; diameter: 9 1/4 in.

  • Notes: John Brown (1736–1803) was a prominent Providence, Rhode Island merchant and Revolutionary leader who helped build the family fortune and founded Brown University. A key instigator of the 1772 Gaspee affair, he served in the Continental Congress and as a Federalist U.S. Representative. His legacy is marked by his mercantile success, as Brown engaged in international shipping, including the China trade, and was a major investor in privateers during the American Revolution.
